Tips for Using a Rice Cooker to Keep It Durable

A rice cooker is one of the most essential kitchen appliances in many households, especially in Indonesia where rice is a daily staple. Today, rice cookers come with various multifunction features, from cooking porridge and soup to slow-cooking meat. To make sure your rice cooker lasts longer and works properly, it’s important to use and care for it the right way. Fortunately, maintaining a rice cooker is not difficult if done correctly.

So, how do you use a rice cooker properly to keep it durable? Here are some practical tips you can apply at home.

1. Avoid Washing Rice Directly in the Inner Pot

Washing rice directly in the rice cooker pot may seem convenient, but it can slowly damage the non-stick coating. Unwashed rice grains are hard and can scratch the surface. It’s better to wash the rice in a separate bowl, then transfer it into the pot before cooking. This simple habit can significantly extend the life of your rice cooker.

2. Use Wooden or Plastic Rice Paddles

Metal utensils can easily scratch and wear down the inner coating of the pot. To protect the non-stick surface, always use rice paddles made of wood or heat-resistant plastic when stirring or serving rice.

3. Cook Rice According to the Recommended Capacity

Always follow the capacity guidelines provided by the manufacturer. Cooking too much rice can cause overflow and uneven cooking, while cooking too little may affect the heating process. Choose a rice cooker size that suits your needs—small capacity for personal use, or larger ones for families.

4. Do Not Scrape Off Dried Rice Crust

Burnt or dried rice at the bottom of the pot is common, but scraping it off can damage the coating. Instead, soak the pot in warm water with dish soap for 5–10 minutes before washing. The crust will loosen naturally without harming the pot.

5. Make Sure the Outside of the Pot Is Completely Dry

Before placing the inner pot back into the rice cooker, ensure the outer surface is completely dry. Moisture on the outside can interfere with the heating element, causing unstable temperatures and unevenly cooked rice.

6. Clean the Rice Cooker Properly

Regular cleaning helps keep your rice cooker in good condition. Wash the inner pot with mild soap and dry it thoroughly. For the outer body and heating unit, simply wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Never immerse the main unit in water.

7. Check and Clean the Steam Vent or Water Collector

The steam vent or water collector often gets overlooked, even though it can trap moisture, dirt, and odors. Clean it regularly using a small brush and rinse thoroughly to prevent unpleasant smells and maintain hygiene.

8. Unplug the Rice Cooker After Use

Leaving the rice cooker plugged in when not in use can shorten its lifespan due to unnecessary electrical stress. After cooking and keeping the rice warm as needed, unplug the appliance to maintain its internal components and save energy.
