Faux fur jackets are often a go-to choice when the air feels cooler or when you want to elevate your everyday look. Although they’re commonly associated with cold weather, this type of jacket is also widely used as a fashion statement. Unfortunately, faux fur material requires special care to stay soft and maintain its quality.
Improper washing methods can cause the fur to clump, feel rough, or even develop unpleasant odors. To keep your favorite jacket well-maintained and comfortable to wear, here are several easy steps you can follow to wash a faux fur jacket at home.
1. Choose the Right Detergent from the Start
Before washing, pay attention to the type of detergent you use. Faux fur jackets should be cleaned with a mild detergent to prevent damage to the fur fibers. Avoid harsh detergents or bleach, as these can alter the texture and make the fur look dull.
Mix a small amount of mild detergent with cold water in a basin or bucket, then stir gently until dissolved.
2. Soak Without Leaving It Too Long
Place the faux fur jacket into the detergent solution until it is fully submerged. There’s no need to soak it for too long—around 10 minutes is enough to help loosen dirt. While soaking, gently move the jacket in the water without twisting or pressing it too firmly.
This method helps clean the jacket while keeping the fur from becoming tangled or damaged.
3. Clean Using Gentle Movements
If certain areas appear dirtier, clean them by lightly pressing or gently rubbing with your hands. Avoid scrubbing too hard, as this can damage the fur structure and cause clumping once the jacket dries.
Focus on areas that tend to collect dirt, such as the collar, cuffs, or around the zipper.
4. Rinse Thoroughly Until Clean
Once washing is complete, drain the soapy water and replace it with clean water. Rinse the jacket several times until no soap residue remains. Leftover detergent can make the fur feel stiff if not rinsed properly.
Make sure the rinse water runs clear before moving on to the next step.
5. Remove Excess Water Without Twisting
To remove excess water, gently press the jacket. Do not wring or twist it forcefully. Alternatively, roll the jacket in a dry towel and press lightly so the towel absorbs the water.
This method is safer and helps maintain the jacket’s shape.
6. Dry It the Right Way
Dry the faux fur jacket by hanging it or laying it flat on a drying rack in an area with good air circulation. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can damage the fur texture and cause the color to fade.
While drying, gently smooth the fur with your hands to prevent creases or compression marks. The drying process usually takes about 24–48 hours until the jacket is completely dry.
With proper care, a faux fur jacket can stay clean, soft, and comfortable to wear for a long time. Make sure the jacket is fully dry before storing or wearing it again to preserve the fur quality and prevent unpleasant odors.
