How to Remove Black Burnt Residue from Frying Pans

Frying pans that are used regularly will eventually develop black, burnt residue from oil and leftover food. If not cleaned properly, these stains can make the pan look dull and leave the kitchen feeling less clean.

Many people try to scrub burnt pans with steel brushes to remove the stains quickly. However, this method can damage the pan’s surface and shorten its lifespan. To clean black residue without harming your cookware, try the simple methods below.

1. Soak with Hot Water and Dish Soap

The easiest and safest way to remove burnt residue is by soaking the pan in hot water mixed with dish soap. Hot water helps soften the burnt layer, while the soap lifts grease and food residue.

Soak the pan for about 15–20 minutes, then gently scrub it using a soft sponge. If the stains remain, repeat the soaking process until the surface looks clean again.

2. Use Baking Soda for Stubborn Stains

For thicker or more stubborn residue, baking soda works very well. Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to create a thick paste, then apply it to the burnt areas.

Let it sit for 10–15 minutes so the baking soda can loosen the stains. After that, gently scrub with a soft scrubber and rinse thoroughly.

3. Clean with Natural Acidic Ingredients

Household ingredients such as vinegar, lemon, or lime juice contain natural acids that help break down burnt residue. Pour or apply one of these ingredients directly onto the affected area and let it sit for a while.

Once the residue starts to loosen, gently scrub and rinse with clean water. This method is suitable for pans that can tolerate mild acidic cleaning.

4. Remove Stains Using Tomato Sauce

Tomato sauce may sound unusual, but it can help remove burnt stains thanks to its natural acidity. Simply spread tomato sauce over the burnt area and leave it for about 10–15 minutes.

After that, wash the pan with dish soap as usual. This method can help restore the pan’s surface and reduce stubborn stains.

5. Finish with Salt and Oil

For light residue, a mixture of salt and a small amount of cooking oil can be used as a finishing cleaner. Mix both ingredients into a paste, then gently rub it onto the remaining stains.

Rinse thoroughly and dry the pan with a clean cloth to prevent moisture and odors.
